Foundations of Benchmarking
This workshop introduces the foundations of benchmarking in higher education, focusing on how institutions use data comparisons to inform decisions and improve performance. Participants will explore internal, external, and longitudinal benchmarking approaches, learn how to select appropriate comparison groups, and practice interpreting data in context. The session also highlights key data sources and addresses ethical considerations to support responsible use of benchmarking in institutional practice.
Learning Outcomes:
- Define benchmarking and explain its role in data-informed decision-making and continuous improvement.
- Differentiate between internal, external, and longitudinal benchmarking approaches and identify appropriate use cases for each.
- Select and justify appropriate comparison groups (e.g., peer, aspirational, competitor) using a balanced approach that combines data and professional judgment.
- Interpret benchmarking data in context to identify strengths, gaps, and areas for improvement.
- Recognize ethical considerations and potential biases in benchmarking and apply strategies to ensure responsible data interpretation and use.
