The AIR LEADs Experience: An Interview with Greg Harris

  • by Greg T. Harris; Director of Institutional Research; Institutional Planning, Assessment, and Research; East Carolina University

AIR caught up with Greg T. Harris, Director of Institutional Research within the Office for Institutional Planning, Assessment & Research at East Carolina University, to chat about his experience with the AIR LEADs course.

Q: What “aha” moments did you have during AIR LEADs
A: This was the most time I had ever spent around IR professionals where we didn’t talk about data! It was enlightening to see that we all experience so many of the same challenges. The program helped me see that being an effective IR leader means building trust, communicating with clarity, and aligning data work with institutional strategy. I also gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of self-awareness and emotional intelligence in leading teams through change.

Q: Who do you think would benefit most from AIR LEADs
A: It’s especially valuable for those who already have strong technical skills but want to grow in areas like strategic thinking, communication, and organizational leadership. The program bridges that gap beautifully.

Q: What was different about AIR LEADs from other training you’ve completed?
A: LEADs was different because it wasn’t just about tools or techniques - it was about transformation. The cohort-based model created a strong sense of community, and the facilitators brought a wealth of experience and insight. The content was thoughtfully curated to challenge and inspire, and the reflective exercises helped me connect the material to my own leadership journey.

Q: Is there a moment since completing the course when you’ve leveraged what you learned from AIR LEADs
A: Absolutely. When I stepped into the role of Interim Director - and later accepted the position permanently - I leaned heavily on what I learned in LEADs. From navigating institutional politics to managing team dynamics and advocating for the IR office’s strategic value, the program gave me the confidence and tools to lead effectively during a time of transition and beyond.

Q: Is there anything else, in general, you’d like to share?
A: LEADs was a turning point in my professional development. It gave me the clarity, confidence, and community I needed to take the next step in my career. I’m incredibly grateful for the experience and would encourage anyone on the path to IR leadership to take full advantage of this opportunity.
