Education Department Refreshes FVT/GE Reporting Data; About 1,550 Institutions Still Short

The U.S. Department of Education refreshed its Financial Value Transparency and Gainful Employment (FVT/GE) reporting guidance on September 25, 2026, posting an updated spreadsheet that reflects the latest data institutions submitted for the 2024 and 2025 cycles.

The revised figures show progress: about 1,550 institutions still haven't reported all required FVT/GE data, down from the more than 1,900 the Department flagged when it first issued the guidance—electronic announcement GENERAL-26-49—in August. Institutions that remain out of compliance must submit an explanation to the Secretary before the reporting deadlines.

Those deadlines haven't moved. Institutions have until October 1, 2026, to report for the 2026 cycle and until January 15, 2027, to submit delinquent 2024 and 2025 data. The Department intends to publish statistics drawn from FVT/GE and the new Student Tuition and Transparency System (STATS) in 2027.

The guidance also clarifies the transition to STATS, which replaces FVT/GE. An institution that leaves optional data fields blank for the 2026 cycle will be treated as early-implementing STATS and the Earnings Accountability rule.
