Job Duties
Position Description:
The Director of Reporting provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for key areas of the University’s external reporting obligations. The position is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely submission of data files and statistical reports required by the UNC System, state and federal agencies, accrediting bodies, outside media organizations such as U.S. News & World Report and Princeton Review, as well as various disclosures to the public.
The Director is also responsible for dissemination of statistical information to campus stakeholders. This role is charged with developing, managing, and delivering statistical reports to support University decision making at all levels, institutional planning, evaluation of academic program productivity and quality, analysis of enrollments and funding, and many other needs. In collaboration with other OIRA staff, the Director of reporting oversees the design and execution of standardized reports, dashboards, and data visualizations in alignment with institutional needs and data governance standards.
This position coordinates these data collection and reporting processes across a network of academic and operational units that generate source data, review data summaries for errors, or manage enterprise applications and data repositories. Ongoing, clear communication with these stakeholders, as well as the UNC System staff, is a critical component of this position.
The position reports to the Associate Provost of Institutional Research, Planning, & Assessment and is part of the leadership team in OIRPA. The Director of Reporting collaborates with the other senior directors and various team members in ensuring OIRPA fulfills its mission to serve the University. The role involves serving on committees, providing consultation to units about data reporting rules and policies, and working with colleagues to improve processes.
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
Job Qualifications
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
Education Requirements:
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity or professional-level institutional planning/assessment experience, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.
Qualifications and Experience:
Data architecture & warehousing: Strong grasp of data warehouse structures, dimensional modeling, and enterprise ETL/ELT pipelines. Comfort working in SQL-based environments, integrating data from multiple administrative systems, and transforming it for use by analysts in the office and across campus. Experience establishing data security and access processes for data feeds, databases, dashboards, and website content.
Programming and statistical analysis expertise: Proficiency with SAS, R, Python, SQL and similar programming and analysis tools for data preparation, error checking, modeling, validation, and report development. Ability to apply advanced statistical procedures such as
Business intelligence & visualization: Advanced skills with leading BI tools (e.g., Tableau or PowerBI) to develop data dashboards. Knowledge of dashboard accessibility/usability best practices.
Experience supervising and mentoring a team of full-time professionals that support reporting and data management responsibilities.
Successful leadership experience coordinating and directing the activities of a number of units and their staff across a large organization to carry out mandated reporting activities.
Demonstrated, responsible use of AI and other emerging technologies: (1) validate data consistencies against set standards; (2) detect data anomalies and potential errors using rule-based and machine-learning approaches; and (3) improve efficiency via automation of pipelines, scheduled refreshes, and report distribution while adhering to UNC-Chapel Hill data governance and security requirements.
