Job Duties

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Analyst for the Office of Institutional Research. This position reports to the Director and contributes to OIRDS’s core responsibility for producing accurate, consistent, and defensible internal and external reports on faculty, students, staff, and other critical academic, physical, and financial information.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
  • Applies institutional research knowledge and sound judgment to interpret reporting requirements.
  • Validates and reconciles data outputs.
  • Ensures compliance-aligned deliverables that meet leadership and external reporting standards.

Job Qualifications

Minimum Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics, statistics, social science, or related field, plus five years of progressively responsible experience developing reports, dashboards, indicators, and performance measures for end users, preferably in higher education or the public sector.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Experience using querying tools (GUI- and/or code-based) with large relational databases and multidimensional data concepts.
  • Proficiency in SAS, SPSS, or comparable statistical/data management tools; advanced Tableau experience required.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables and cross-tab queries.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and data interpretation skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty and staff, independently when needed, and effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in a related quantitative or scientific discipline.
  • Experience with MS SQL, Oracle, and higher education data environments.
  • Institutional Research experience and knowledge of higher education operations and organizational structures.
  • Strong technical aptitude and interest in emerging data management technologies.

Equipment Utilized / Technical Proficiencies

  • Proficiency with data management, statistical, and querying tools for large relational databases.
  • Advanced experience with Tableau, SAS/SPSS (or comparable tools), Microsoft Access, and Excel, including pivot tables, crosstab queries, and ODBC connections.
