Using IPEDS to Support Compliance Reporting for Accreditation

Two-Part Virtual Workshop: August 19 and 21, 2:30–5:30 p.m. ET
Pricing: $225 members/$325 nonmembers
Accrediting agencies increasingly expect institutions to demonstrate effectiveness through comparative data. This interactive, hands-on virtual workshop is designed to help assessment and institutional effectiveness professionals confidently use IPEDS data to build benchmarking tables aligned with accreditation standards. Spread across two half-days, the workshop combines live sessions and asynchronous activities to balance flexibility with hands-on learning.
On day 1, participants will receive a guided overview of the IPEDS system, explore key benchmarking categories (e.g., student achievement, faculty, finances), and walk through live demonstrations of the Compare Institutions tool. Sample tables will be shared.
On day 2, participants will apply what they’ve learned in a collaborative environment. After a discussion on best practices for creating visualizations and an instructor-led demonstration, participants will build sample tables aligned to accreditation priorities, interpret trends, and discuss visualization strategies. The session will wrap with a review of participant-created tables.
Participants will leave with a practical understanding of how to use IPEDS variables to help demonstrate accreditation compliance, a workbook of sample tables, and increased confidence in using federal data to tell a compelling story of institutional effectiveness.
As a result of this workshop, participants will:
- Understand how accreditors use benchmarking data from IPEDS
- Learn where to find disaggregated data on enrollment, achievement, faculty, and finance
- Practice extracting, comparing, and visualizing IPEDS data
- Build tables that directly support accreditation self-studies
- Avoid common data visualization pitfalls and strengthen data storytelling
