IR Office Staff Roles, FTE, and Characteristics
The responsibilities and duties that constitute institutional research (IR) vary from one institution to another; however, IR and data professionals are essential to accomplish the work. In the 2021 AIR National Survey of IR Offices, we asked IR office leaders to tell us about staff roles and staff sizes, hours worked per week, and to evaluate the adequacy of their staff sizes.

IR Office Teamwork and Efficiency
While it is important to consider analytical and technical skills when hiring new institutional research (IR) staff members, leaders should also consider their offices’ needs and how well candidates fit within the types of work produced, the priorities of stakeholders served, and overall work culture of the office and institution. In the 2018 AIR National Survey of IR Offices, we asked IR leaders to evaluate their staffs’ work quality, efficiency, and effectiveness as well as their abilities to develop interpersonal relationships, communicate effectively, and contribute to teams.

Transformation of data into informed decisions requires a financial investment (or commitment) by the institution. Hardware, software, and other resources are essential to the work of institutional research (IR). Yet the tools and technology are inadequate without a corresponding investment in people. Salaries play critical roles in recruiting and retaining highly skilled staff. In the 2018 AIR National Survey of IR Offices, we asked leaders to describe and evaluate staff salaries.

The Use of a Viability Index as a Better Measure of Departmental and Program Strength
Although many institutions and government agencies count degrees as the sole measure of determining departmental or program viability, this method fails to consider other factors such as how many students who are within programs are present to replace students who graduated from those programs or how many credit hours were generated in the area. This article highlights an easy-to-create, ratio-driven metric that can help an academic department or program to determine its overall strength.
