Springfield was home to Abraham Lincoln, our nation’s sixteenth president and one of its most famous political figures. A historical downtown area features the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum, the Old State Capitol, the Lincoln historical district, historic reenactments and events, the Illinois State Museum, and a variety of specialty shops and restaurants which make Springfield the most prominent tourist destination in central Illinois.

Springfield is also home to the second Illinois Medical District (the first being in Chicago) and includes two major medical centers, Memorial Health Systems and HSHS St. John’s Health Systems, as well as the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The medical community and state government are the two largest employers in Springfield.

Springfield offers daily Amtrak service to St. Louis and Chicago as well as to points beyond. A regional airport offers daily service to major hubs in Chicago and Dallas. City bus service is provided from the UIS campus to various locations around the city.
Job dutiesOverview: Reporting to the AVCRIE and Director of Institutional Research, this position provides comprehensive institutional effectiveness research to support institutional decision-making, strategic planning, and assessment. Develops interactive and intuitive data visualizations to communicate the meaning of data through websites, periodic reports, and presentations to campus leadership and other constituents.

Characteristic duties and responsibilities:
• Conduct evidence-based high-impact research and perform measurement studies in support of university-wide strategic plans, institutional effectiveness, cost effectiveness, and the development of policies, curricula, programs, services, and initiatives. 25%
• Oversee the development of appropriate data models and produce visualizations for a variety of University stakeholders. 20%
• Lead campus teams to identify trends and fluctuations, perform forecasting, interpret results, evaluate limitations of data to facilitate management planning and budgeting. 20%
• Represent the Office of Institutional Effectiveness on campus-wide committees. Provide leadership to the campus community in the area of institutional data analysis for resource decisions, policy impact, and strategic actions. 10%
• Design effective research strategies and gather relevant information using primary and secondary sources and techniques, including University and System-wide data sources. 10%
• Oversee the appropriate application of university data, including familiarity with the legal and regulatory environment controlling the use and dissemination of data, including highly confidential information. 5%
• Create data visualization standards, and explore new analytical products to periodically raise those standards. 5%
• Oversee the day to day operations within a fast-paced office, working with the IR team related to processes of data analysis requests, including potential supervision of graduate assistant. 5%

Environmental demands: Work is primarily performed in an office setting, with regular occasions of walking to other offices on campus to gather information about projects with users.
QualificationsRequired qualifications/minimum education and work experience:
• Master’s degree in a research field.
• At least five years of experience, or two years of experience and a master’s degree related to the responsibilities of the position;
• Familiar with coding;
• Experience with interactive data visualization tools, such as Tableau, Web Intelligence, and Excel, including Slicers and Pivot Tables;
• Demonstrated skill in database development, management, query and execution (e.g., SQL, Access);
• Knowledge of statistical and data analysis software tools (e.g., SPSS, R, Python);
• Skill in statistics and mathematics;
• Skill in cost/benefit analyses and budgeting;
• Attentive to detail, organized and flexible in an environment of multiple projects and continually shifting deadlines;
• Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a fast-paced administrative environment;
• Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical ideas to non-technical professionals;
• Strong oral and written communication skills;
• Strong problem solving skills;
• Ability to work independently and take initiative.

Preferred qualifications/education/work experience:
• Master’s degree in an analytical area;
• Understanding of data-driven decision-making in higher education;
• Familiarity with budgeting in higher education;
• Prior work experience in higher education administration;
• Experience with research methodology and design;
• Demonstrated skill using Crystal Reports or similar BI Visualization software;
• Supervisory experience in higher education.
Salary range$60,000 - $80,000
