Job dutiesReporting directly to the Managing Director of the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI), the HERI Assistant Director for Data Management is responsible for managing the development and maintenance of HERI's research databases. The incumbent also determines the structure of annual and trended survey databases and writes syntax to produce the suite of reports that results of descriptive and inferential analyses of survey data. Primary responsibilities include: database management, design and implementation of coding architecture for survey items, and creation and maintenance of code in SPSS, SQL, R, and/or Python to produce descriptive reports provided to participating campuses. Survey projects currently include: the CIRP Freshman Survey that contains 52 years of data on over 15 million college students, the Your First College Year Survey, Diverse Learning Environments Survey, the College Senior Survey, the Staff Climate Survey, and the triennial HERI Faculty Survey.

The HERI Assistant Director for Data Management will supervise a Programmer Analyst. This position is semi-autonomous, and the employee is solely responsible for determining and maintaining management of extensive databases, including data integrity and accuracy of statistical analyses, which are provided annually to hundreds of colleges and universities throughout the United States.

Type of Supervision Received/Exercised:
Work is assigned directly by the HERI Managing Director and reviewed periodically with the employee with respect to meeting deadlines. In-house and within-department personnel exist as resources for normal procedures and policies and as problem-solvers for special needs.
Qualifications1. Experience with SPSS including its Custom Tables module (or similar statistical software package) with a demonstrated ability to accurately create coding schemes for large longitudinal datasets

2. Basic knowledge of descriptive statistical procedures and the corresponding underlying statistical concepts.

3. Working knowledge to create descriptive comparison reports using extensive datasets.

4. Ability to interpret quantitative data to report Higher Education Research Institute findings to a variety of external clients and internal researchers.

5. Ability and willingness to work directly and collaboratively with multilingual, multiethnic, and/or multiracial and/or other education and non-education professional and lay persons.

6. Ability to accept delegated work, validate expectations, problem-solve obstacles, and follow-up to completion and/or report status of delegated tasks.

7. Ability and willingness to work as an effective, collegial, contributing member of Higher Education Research Institute staff and, as may be necessary, work independently in successfully accomplishing assigned tasks.

8. Ability to work with competing deadlines, meet fixed deadlines, manage multiple assignments, and follow through tasks to completion with attention to detail.

9. Demonstrated ability to efficiently operate Macintosh and Windows-based computers including using the most current versions Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint software.

10. Ability to effectively hire personnel with required skill sets and supervise staff to schedule workflow to meet fixed deadlines within available budget/resources.

11. Advanced working knowledge of database management procedures and software tools to facilitate database management, including expertise in MySQL, SQL, R, Pyhton or similar programming languages.

12. Demonstrated working knowledge of institutions of higher education and their structures and organizations sufficient to cooperatively and collegially work with representatives of the colleges and universities that participate in HERI's surveys.

13. Basic knowledge of survey development and administration and associated data analysis sufficient to recommend modifications, evaluate quality, and determine ease and practicality of administration.

14. Master's degree from an accredited university or college or equivalent work experience with a concentration in computer science, database management, information management, management information systems or similar field.
