The AIR National Survey is a comprehensive, longitudinal study of the IR data function within U.S. higher education institutions. Data collections have occurred in 2021, 2018, and 2015. The next data collection will be in November of 2024.
How To Participate
We're gearing up for the 2024 administration of the AIR National Survey! Help ensure the appropriate person at your institution receives an invitation by reviewing the contact information we have on file. If this is not the best person to participate on behalf of your institution, or if your institution is not listed, add your institution to the list and/or tell us who is the most appropriate contact.
We recommend the survey be completed by the person who leads the IR/IE office or the data/analytics function.
Why Participate
By completing the AIR National Survey, you help create a reliable and complete set of information that accurately represents the current state of IR/IE including functional roles, responsibilities, trends, structures, and the diversity of activities. Your response will contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the similarities and differences in IR/IE functions across all types of institutions.
Important Dates
- Now – October 2024: Make sure your institution's contact info is up to date
- November 2024 – January 2025: Data collection is open
- Summer 2025: Reports are released

About the 2024 Survey
Consistent with previous administrations, the 2024 study will collect information about office structures, leadership, staffing, resources, and activities. The 2024 study will also include new questions to gather insights within the following areas:
- The roles and responsibilities of institutional effectiveness offices as distinct and separate from those of institutional research offices.
- The adoption and use of artificial intelligence within IR/IE offices.
- The maturity levels of the data function within institutions.
- The prevalence of the “chief data officer” role and the core responsibilities.
The results of the AIR National Survey will be publicly available and presented in various reports and formats as a resource for the higher education community. Access to a separate benchmarking platform will not be available for purchase in 2024.
