Student Success and Support Program Research Analyst

Definition
Under direction of the Administrative Director, Research, Planning and Institutional Effectiveness, to design and conduct research to evaluate institutional planning issues supporting Student Success and Support Program (SSSP) activities, including accreditation, student success, retention, institutional effectiveness, instruction, equity, student services, program review, matriculation, grant projects, community characteristics, and other related special projects; develops methodology for empirical and statistical studies; analyzes and provides interpretation of studies in written technical reports and oral presentations; may oversee the work of other staff at the same or lower level; and to perform related work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:
The Research Analyst is in the Para-professional level classification in the Research series requiring specific training and experience with institutional research issues and advanced technical skills in research methodology, analysis, technical report writing, and technical presentations.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Research Analyst under direction applies knowledge and skills in research methodology and analysis to support a college culture of evidence and data-supported decision making. Incumbents, under direction, perform all phases of research studies and reporting including problem definition, study design, data collection and analysis, interpretation, and presentation findings.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Design research studies (including project scope, methodology, data sources, and analytical strategy) related to such matters as curricula, enrollment, retention, matriculation, equity gaps, staffing patterns, program review, student and faculty characteristics, community characteristics, student learning outcomes, and other related studies.
• Select, adapt, and apply appropriate research and statistical techniques to specific areas of study.
• Develop reports and dashboards from multiple data sources using industry standard reporting and data visualization tools.
• Collect data and develop procedures to organize, code, and enter data.
• Construct and maintain simple databases using applicable relational or statistical software to retrieve and analyze research data.
• Ensure accuracy and integrity of data and research findings.
• Utilize current technology to support institutional research needs, governmental compliance, and reporting requirements.
• Design surveys, interviews, and relational databases; conduct and/or oversee interviews and surveys to gather information for research projects
• Compose and edit research materials in a variety of formats, including but not limited to graphs and charts for research reports and presentations; compose graphs and charts to show changes in data over a period of time; prepare data for publication.
• Write technical reports to provide information, interpretation, and recommendations on research projects.
• Communicate complex research methodology and results in written and oral format in formal and informal presentations.
• Communicate effectively and work both independently and as part of a team to analyze and interpret data; respond to research questions as requested; describe findings.
• Schedule, participate, and lead meetings and committees as needed or required.
• May lead and oversee work of other research or office staff at same or lower levels.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
QualificationsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
• Research design, methods, sampling, and analytical techniques.
• Issues and current trends in higher education, particularly as they apply to California Community Colleges.
• Statistical software, spreadsheet software, relational database management software, data visualization software and proficiency in their use for research projects.
• Collection and coding of data, and extraction of data, including basic knowledge of programming languages (e.g., SQL).
• Comprehensive report preparation and technical writing to effectively communicate purpose, method, analysis, results, and recommendations of research projects.
• Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Ability to:
• Independently design and conduct institutional research projects and studies utilizing quantitative and qualitative methodologies.
• Initiate projects from conception to completion, i.e.: define project scope; identify data and methodology; design data collection tools; gather, validate, and interpret raw data from a variety of sources; organize, code, and enter data; ensure accuracy and integrity of data; analyze data; write narrative reports describing purpose, methodology, data collected, results, and recommendations.
• Construct written, tabular, and visual materials for research reports and presentations.
• Prepare and deliver oral presentations describing research projects and studies in a clear and concise manner.
• Perform statistical analysis and interpret results and findings.
• Work independently and cooperatively as a team member with other researchers and college staff involved in research projects.
• Exercise creativity and critical judgment.
• Develop and meet schedules and timelines.
• Handle and protect confidential and sensitive data with integrity.
• Use a computer and specialized software for data collection, data extraction, statistical analysis, word processing, spreadsheet development, database management, reports and dashboards, and electronic communication.
• Adapt to and learn new technology and remain current with the trends and methods pertinent to institutional research.
• Communicate effectively in a collegial demeanor both orally and in writing.
• Demonstrate understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, cultural, disability, religious background and sexual orientation of community colleges students, faculty, and staff.

Education and Experience:
• Bachelor's degree in psychology, sociology, education or related field AND
• Completion of at least two years of upper division/graduate coursework in psychology, sociology, education or related field, including a minimum of 6 upper division/graduate units in research methods, statistical analysis and/or tests and measurement. AND
• Minimum of two years experience in a research position, preferably in an educational environment.
• Or, any combination of education and experience that would provide the required qualifications.
Salary range$60,000 - $80,000

Conditions of Employment
This is a full time, specially funded, 12 month per year position. The District reserves the right to extend, modify, or eliminate this position based upon available funds. The normal hours of work are to be arranged between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.
