Job Duties

Under general supervision, the incumbent will extract, compile, analyze and report data on students, academic and co-curricular programs, personnel, and any other aspects of the university as requested.

Responsibilities include querying large-scale institutional databases; troubleshooting and manipulating data; creating reports; filling cyclical and ad-hoc data requests and reporting requirements; designing and conducting analytical, research and evaluation studies including developing and validating predictive models, preparing interpretive analyses and presenting findings in narrative, graphic and dashboard formats; and effectively interacting with the university community and external constituencies in carrying out these responsibilities.

A strong customer service orientation is essential, as is the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, meet deadlines and accurately handle details. The ability to think in a logical, sequential manner is essential and may be demonstrated through experience such as computer programming; i.e., writing code, scripts, or syntax. 

The position is full-time, limited-term, and benefits-eligible.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

1. Data Analyses, Reporting, and Visualization

  • Leverage data and advanced techniques to develop, implement, and analyze predictive models that enable data-driven, strategic decision-making
  • Develops reports to help stakeholders assess and evaluate the effectiveness of implementation strategies (student achievement, enrollment and retention data, academic data)
  • Develops and deliver cyclical reports of student characteristics (academic, demographic, and socio-economic), student achievement (GPA, units completed, retention, graduation, and time-to-degree) and student enrollment (student headcounts, unit load, course enrollment data)
  • Designs, creates, implements and deploy accurate, visually appealing and informative data displays and data dashboards using Tableau Desktop software
  • Collaborates with other Research Analysts in studies, projects and institutional processes undertaken by the Office of Institutional Planning and Research (e.g., Program Review, Course Evaluations, etc.)
  • Collaborates with other Research Analysts in fulfilling external reporting requirements, such federal, state, local and institutional/organizational surveys and questionnaires
  • Fulfills ad hoc data requests

2. Grant Support

  • Provides comprehensive data and analytic support and collaborate with the Title V Project Coordinator, Director of Student Success and Retention, and external evaluator as appropriate.
  • Surveys and Questionnaires
  • Develops and conducts surveys of students, employees, and other constituents to gather quantitative and qualitative information on topics such as satisfaction with services, impact of programs, etc. 
  • Analyze results and present them in a clear and concise manner to stakeholders

3. Accreditation Support

  • Provides data and analytic support for university-wide and program accreditation

4. Training and Professional Development

  • Research and gain expertise on software products and report development methodologies, as assigned

Other Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Performs other job-related duties, as assigned


Job Qualifications

Knowledge: 

  • Strong understanding of relational database structures, theories, principles, and practices
  • Coursework or demonstrated experience in the use of statistics and relevant applications (i.e., SPSS), research methodologies, predictive modeling, and sound survey research practices
  • Familiarity with common institutional research and effectiveness measures (e.g., retention, graduation rates, etc.) is preferred
  • Experience with one or more of the following is preferred: Banner, PeopleSoft, or preferably Ellucian's Colleague, especially academic / student modules
  • Experience with data visualization software (familiarity with Tableau is preferred)
  • Good knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws

  • Clearly communicate technical information to colleagues, including those who do not have a technical background

  • Travel occasionally as needed for professional development / training

Education: 

  • Bachelor's degree required in data science, data analysis or a related field; Master's degree preferred

Experience: 

  • At least two years of direct work experience
  • Professional experience in a higher education setting preferred
