The Data and Strategy Associate (DSA) performs critical tasks related to developing, implementing, and supporting institutional strategy and decision-making at Washington State University (WSU).  The DSA is responsible for conducting comprehensive environmental scans, monitoring trends in higher education, and providing strategic insights through complex institutional and external data analysis. 

 

Three key areas of focus include: 

 

1) Institutional Strategy Formulation 

  • Conduct continual environmental scans to identify emerging trends, challenges, and opportunities for WSU. 
  • Contextualize identified trends or research findings for higher education and articulate WSU’s strategic position through analysis of relevant data. 
  • Develop long and short-term projections based on identified trends, relevant literature, and WSU’s fiscal environment. 
  • Maximize cross-functional strategy and process alignment through engagement with campuses, colleges, and units. 

2) Institutional Strategy Execution 

  • Provide ongoing strategy management through identifying, developing, and monitoring institutional strategies. 
  • Analyze measures of success through the development of institutional metrics, dashboards, and data visualizations. 
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of implemented strategies through goal achievement, constituent engagement, financial performance, and market position. 

3) Institutional Knowledge Management 

  • Communicate institutional strategy internally to promote understanding and share best practices throughout the institution. 
  • Benchmark WSU against relevant institutional peers and understand market competitiveness.  
  • Develop proficiency in WSU's operations, including an in-depth understanding of its land grant mission, vision, culture, shared governance structures, business processes, and decision-making bodies. 

 

Job Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Positions require a Bachelor’s degree in business administration or other relevant field AND five (5) years of progressively responsible experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Demonstrated experience with the following: 
    • Demonstrated experience collecting, analyzing, and/or synthesizing data for actionable insights. 
    • Demonstrated experience creating, developing, maintaining, and/or using institutional data systems and relational databases or information management systems. 
    • Demonstrated experience with data management and visualization techniques, and/or statistical analysis and predictive modeling. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A master’s or doctoral degree.
  • Working knowledge of statistical, query-based, or data management software (e.g. SQL, SAS, R, Python, Tableau, Oracle OAC). 
  • Experience in planning, organizing, and managing large complex research projects, including managing multiple projects simultaneously and adhering to deadlines. 
  • Proficiency in qualitative and quantitative data management and analysis 
  • Experience working within an Institutional Research, Institutional Effectiveness, or another analytical unit in higher education. 
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment, ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships, and strong communication skills. 
  • An appreciation and respect for a diverse workplace and a willingness to engage in actions to enhance the diversity at WSU.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Ability and willingness to share ideas, be open to the ideas of others, and work towards organizational goals and interests.
