Job Summary
The Senior Data Analyst in Institutional Research plays a critical role in analyzing and visualizing data to support strategic planning, program evaluation, and key performance metrics across both instructional and non-instructional departments at an academic institution. The position involves developing interactive dashboards and providing data-driven insights using tools such as Cognos, MS Excel, and Edify. Responsibilities also include preparing and delivering regular and ad-hoc reports for internal and external stakeholders, ensuring the accuracy and quality of institutional submissions to state, federal, and college-level entities. The role requires knowledge of SQL-based databases and applications, with an emphasis on creating queries, developing dashboards, and troubleshooting. In addition to supporting the Director of Institutional Research, the Analyst will assist with grant-related data needs, provide training on data analysis tools, and support the data integrity and functionality of systems. Strong communication skills are essential for interpreting complex data and guiding stakeholders in decision-making.

Top Three Characteristics for a Successful Candidate:
• Proficiency in Data Analysis & Visualization: Experience with tools such as Cognos, MS Excel, Edify, and PowerBI to design dashboards, generate reports, and interpret complex data for various audiences.
• Technical Expertise & Problem-Solving: Knowledge of SQL and strong skills in database management, along with the ability to troubleshoot issues and improve system functionality, ensuring data accuracy and integrity.
• Effective Communication & Collaboration: Excellent communication abilities to explain technical data to diverse stakeholders and collaborate with internal departments, faculty, and external organizations to meet data needs.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Knowledge of data structures and data manipulation techniques.
• Working knowledge of statistics and research techniques.
• Knowledge of database construction, management, and retrieval methods.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Ability to use Cognos and Cognos Report Studio to design and produce reports.
• Ability to conduct collaborative studies, maintain timeliness, identify challenges to progress, and effectively communicate in oral and written forms with all levels of staff.
• Demonstrated ability to write documentation on developed work.
• Ability to plan, create, query, and manage computer databases across multiple hardware and operating system platforms/environments. Knowledge of SQL to indirectly create SQL queries.
• Ability to apply critical thinking to complex systems for troubleshooting.
• Attention to detail.
• Ability to learn new programming languages, techniques, and systems quickly
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree or associate degree and two years of experience database development, data analysis or related experience.
• Two years of demonstrated experience creating and maintaining dashboards using data visualization tools.
• Experience with data science, creation of dashboards and visualizations, Structured Query Language (SQL), Microsoft Office applications – Word, Excel, and Access, and working with large institutional databases and data warehouses.
• Demonstrated experience interpreting data requests to produce final reports
Preferred Qualifications
• One-year full time (or equivalent) experience in a higher education environment.
• Documented experience working with users to clarify reporting needs.
• Demonstrated experience creating or managing solutions using Python, Visual Basic, other programming languages, and/or Microsoft automation.
• Experience with Git for source and version control of code and custom data items.
• Experience with SPSS statistical software or other statistical software
