Looking Ahead: Welcoming New Leadership in a Time of Change

  • by Brent Drake, AIR Board Chair 2024-25

With the recent AIR election concluded and results officially certified by the Nominations & Elections Committee (NEC), I’m pleased to extend heartfelt congratulations to our newly elected Board and NEC members. We look forward to formally announcing their names in early April. Your leadership will be an invaluable asset to AIR, and I’m excited to work alongside each of you in the year ahead.

I also want to express my sincere thanks to the NEC for assembling such a strong and thoughtful slate of candidates. The work you do is vital to the success of our organization, and your diligence made this year’s election both meaningful and impactful.

To everyone who submitted materials and stepped forward as a candidate—thank you. Your willingness to engage in this process is a testament to the strength of our community. If you were not elected this time, I hope you’ll consider running again in the future. I say this from personal experience: my first nomination to the Board didn’t result in election either—but persistence matters, and your contributions are valued.

We find ourselves in a time of tremendous upheaval in postsecondary education—from significant layoffs at the National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES), to institutional investigations, frozen funding, and an executive order aimed at dismantling the Department of Education. In moments like these, our work to support and improve our institutions is more critical than ever. And the strength of a professional community like AIR—offering shared wisdom, support, and solidarity—cannot be overstated.

The AIR Executive Office and Board of Directors are committed to guiding the organization and our members through this challenging period. I’m proud to be part of such a resilient, mission-driven community, and I’m deeply grateful to each of you for your role in it.

Thank you for being a part of AIR.
