Job dutiesEmployee must work independently and collaboratively with various University constituencies and manage multiple, concurrent projects. The employee must listen carefully and use sound judgment and critical thinking in developing queries and reports. The employee must communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences. The employee’s work must be accurate and consistent. It is imperative that the employee exercise confidentiality and discretion in the performance of these duties.

Using advanced skills in Structured Query Language (SQL) and Visual Basic for Applications (Excel VBA macro programing), write, test, modify, and debug programs using a variety of software development tools on a daily basis to provide data to the end user.

Work with colleagues throughout the University to determine information needs and identify the data to respond to those needs, offering alternative solutions if necessary. Develop specifications for providing the data and construct data queries to generate extracts and reports appropriate for the end user. Review output for reasonableness, validity, consistency, and accuracy.

Using a variety of tools and resources, synthesize data into meaningful information in tables, graphs, and charts which will be used by Washburn leadership in planning and decision-making as well as by internal and external constituents requiring information about the University.

Determine data requirements and provide data extracts for reporting to federal and national surveys and the Kansas Higher Education Data System.

Document all project processes, sources, and techniques to ensure consistent application of methodology in future projects.

Develop a code repository to minimize duplication of code for use in other projects.

Serve on project teams and University committees as assigned. Participate in professional development activities to ensure currency and continuous skill enhancement relevant to the institution’s needs.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, business intelligence, mathematics/statistics, or related field and one year of relevant work experience OR bachelor’s degree in other area and three years of relevant work experience. One year of experience creating SQL in a relational database management system or completion of 9 credit hours at the college level in database management systems and/or software development. Demonstrated ability to: Use a variety of software including SQL and VBA; query multiple tables within a large relational database; communicate clearly verbally and in written, numerical and graphical form; effectively manage multiple projects concurrently; work independently and collaboratively with multiple constituencies; maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion. Employment at Washburn University will be conditioned upon satisfactory completion of a background check.

Preferred Qualifications: Work experience in higher education with operational data store and/or data warehouses with Ellucian Higher Education (Banner) software; and/or with third party reporting tools, e.g., Crystal, Argos, or Cognos.
Salary range$40,000 - $60,000
Salary benefitsSalary is lower $40,000 commensurate with qualifications. Washburn provides an excellent fringe benefits package.
