IR&DS accesses, utilizes, analyzes, and reports on data from all of the major administrative systems at Stanford, including student, faculty, course, research, and financial data. IR&DS performs and facilitates complex analyses for both departments and central offices, including collaborating with other universities to provide comparative data, and proactively publishing management reports.
Job dutiesStanford’s Institutional Research & Decision Support Office is seeking an experienced professional to lead our IR team. This is an exciting time for IR at Stanford as we adopt new tools and build infrastructure to deepen our analytical capabilities. We are tasked with providing information to university leadership on critical and timely policy questions, in addition to accomplishing a wide portfolio of annual reporting. We are looking for someone with a track record of analytical leadership and excellence in communicating information using written, verbal, and visual modalities. The successful candidate must have a strong command of the current field of Institutional Research and a record of success as a manager.


The Director of IR will lead a team that interprets, monitors, and analyzes information yielding actionable information to guide university decisions in wide-ranging areas. The Director of IR will provide leadership in a decentralized university context and collaborate closely with partners and stakeholders across campus. The Director will be proactive in defining projects and suggesting areas of investigations. The Director will manage the workflow and priorities of the IR team and will report to the Associate Vice Provost and Director of Institutional Research & Decision Support.

The Core Duties of the position include:
Select the issues and challenges having the most value to the organization and design research to provide insights to university leaders. Select the most appropriate method to address each question or need.
Drive collection of new data and the refinement of existing data sources; apply and use algorithms or other advanced techniques to accomplish this. Recommend ways to apply insights generated from analysis. Assure that reliable and consistent data are maintained and available for both ad hoc and longitudinal inquiries.
Fully analyze a problem, question existing processes and assumptions, gather data and information, find and evaluate alternative solutions, and propose a course of action.
Ensure the integrity and accuracy of reports and deliverables produced by the IR team.
Recruit, train, and supervise staff.
Establish processes for organizing the work of the IR team including tracking requests, monitoring effort, and reviewing deliverables.
Establish standards and processes for documentation, presentation, and quality review of IR team deliverables.
Communicate and visualize informed conclusions and recommendations across an organization’s leadership structure to “tell the story” behind the data and influence how the university approaches challenges.
Interact with and influence senior leaders, faculty, and/or senate with written summaries and/or presentations.
May need to collaborate with other organizations to gather data. Proactively seek and locate data, including outside benchmarks or comparative data, to support or refute proposed decisions.
QualificationsEducation & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree and seven years of extensive, relevant experience or combination of education and relevant technical field experience solving analytical problems using quantitative approaches. Experience managing the work of individual contributors.

Demonstrated ability to plan and organize the work of a team.
Strong project management skills.
Ability to motivate, support, and train team members.
Experience managing a portfolio of responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
Facility in manipulating and analyzing complex, high-volume, high-dimensionality data from varying sources. Extensive experience in and strong passion for empirical research and answering hard questions with data.
Interpersonal and communication skills to effectively convey findings to a variety of audiences and positively influence senior leadership & faculty. Ability to tell stories with data using data visualization software and presentation skills.
Ability to tailor presentations and deliverables to different audiences. Ability to use data retrieval and manipulation tools such as SQL, Brio Query, Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition.
Advanced knowledge of statistical techniques for analyzing social and educational data. Advanced proficiency with statistical tools such as Stata, SAS, R or similar tools.
Demonstrates a flexible analytical approach, crafting multiple options and allowing for results at varying levels of precision.
Facilitation skills to conduct meetings to achieve the desired outcome and manage projects within time constraints.
In depth knowledge of University administrative organization, policies, procedures, and practices for institutional research-oriented roles.
